Thursday, Nov. 10

Hi guys,

PLEASE FILL OUT YOUR HORIZON'S REGISTRY FOR THE FIELD TRIP. CAN'T GO WITHOUT IT.

Also if you would like to get your grade sheet back from the last project just stop on by my office or the graphics lab tomorrow. I'm sorry I've forgotten to give them to you for a couple of class periods. So sorry things get pushed to the bottom of the bag and they never come up for air. So is the life of professor mom - can find the wet wipe but never all the assignment sheets.

For THURSDAY

Bring about $20 for the day. Should give you plenty of padding. We will be meeting up at 8 am at the photohouse. Drive to exit 56 go to the Hatchie National Wildlife Refuge. I'll meet you at the watchtower area around the lake at 8:30 am. Bring your digital camera. Bring your film camera and about two rolls of film. We will take pictures at the Hatchie and then head downtown to Beale St. area to shoot film. From there we will head back down to midtown to the Brooks to see the Eggleston work.

Please read an essay of your choice by him about his work. http://www.egglestontrust.com/. Amanda - there is one on him by Eudora Welty that is a great read. From one literary giant to a photography giant:)

From there we will head to the Jack Robinson gallery back downtown to meet with them at 1 pm. Somewhere in there some good BBQ and more shooting in Memphis. We will leave no later than 3:30 pm to get back by 4:30 pm.

See ya then! Give me a ring if you have any problems or questions!

Tuesday, Nov. 8

Please have a proposal for your ideas for critical landscape and your documentary work (don't forget to include the artist statement and the install in the proposal.)

For Tuesday, shoot 10 test shots in the style of Vilde Rolfsen. She shoots plastic bags turning the object into a landscape through close-up. This is a great example of critical landscape photography. It makes a landscape speak to a greater concept. Please do a test shoot where you turn an object into a landscape. Choose a material that speaks to a greater message.

Here's some examples of Rolfsen's work.

Please submit your photo diary assignment - Katy Grannan before Tuesday. Play around with lighting in the studio this weekend just to brush up on types. Please have three pitches of ideas for your next proposal in you sketchbook for Tuesday. Take those columns that you wrote in your sketchbook as ideas. Start looking at other photographers to put in you sketchbooks for ideas if you hit a wall. Good luck!

Thursday, Sept. 29

Please start your sketchbook for contemporary photography. Start researching ideas, concepts and photographers. Please make a list of three columns. One column - things you hate that make you made. Middle column - things that you are attracted to (aka colors, other artists, settings, objects, etc.) Far column - things that you love. See if there is a way to combine the ideas between them. Look at photographers that work in portraiture that you are attracted to. Print off these works and put them in you sketchbook. A good sketchbook is more of a scrapbook than anything. Lots of bits and pieces make a whole.

It doesn't have to be pretty...just functional. Here are some images of some friends books, former students and professionals.
